How To Layer Your Skincare Like A Pro

Skincare can be daunting. With multiple steps and products, it can feel like a hassle instead of a happy ritual of self-care. What comes first, eye cream or moisturizer? What is a toner? Do I need serums? Don’t worry; we’re here to help.

Cleanse

First and foremost, wash your hands and then your face! If your skin is dry or you’re running late in the morning, you can opt for a micellar water instead. Or, if you are needing a heavier clean after a long day, start with a cleansing balm or oil, then follow up with your traditional cleanser. Make sure your water is not too hot, lather your products so your skin gets to truly absorb all the benefits, rinse thoroughly and pat (not rub) dry.

 Tone

Toners follow cleansers, and are a skincare superhero. Toners come in many different varieties, so find one that fits your skin's needs, from extra hydration to gentle exfoliation. Toners can be applied via spray bottle, with a cotton round (reusable when possible!) or simply patted onto the skin with clean hands.

 Serum

Serums are essential for resilient, balanced, lit-from-within skin. Like toners, serums can be tailored to your skin type. Serums themselves can (and should!) be layered, providing your skin with optimal nutrients and hydration. Start by consistency, lightest to thickest, and allow 30-60 seconds between applications so your skin soaks in all of the benefits fully. Have fun experimenting, but make sure to listen to your skin and keep layering to a minimum if the serums are especially harsh or exfoliating. Any prescription treatments, strong acids or retinoids should be used solo (and at night) or with a very gentle, hydrating serum (always follow your doctor's advice).

 Eye cream

Always protect that sensitive skin surrounding your eyes with a moisturizing eye cream. Some even have caffeine to brighten any dark circles or plumping agents for bags and wrinkles. Go slow and soothing, and apply delicately with your ring finger.

 Moisturize

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Even if your skin feels dry, oily or anything in between. Contrary to popular belief, moisturizer is a key skincare step for all skin types and should not be skipped. Neglecting to hydrate your skin, intentionally or accidentally, can harm your skin’s protective barrier, causing it to get out-of-whack or weakened. This may lead to excess oil, uneven texture, breakouts, and sensitivity, to name a few unwanted side effects. Moisturizer will lock in all of the goodness from your routine and is truly the MVP. Pro tip: for maximum hydration, apply moisturizer to damp skin. Try our Luminous Brightening Elixir to boost a moisturizer or alone for glowing skin!

 Sunscreen or Oils

At the end of your morning routine, apply sunscreen. No matter what. That means even if it’s gray outside or even if you never make it outdoors, please use SPF. Do this every day and your skin will show its thanks by glowing like never before, today and for years to come. Plus, it's the first step against hyperpigmentation. We promise. Meanwhile, face oils are a great addition to your evening skincare routine to gift your skin an extra boost of hydration and healing.Try our Luminous Brightening Elixir to gently even out skin tone and give you a radiant complexion.

Skincare doesn’t have to be a scary science. Of course, the possibilities are endless and there are more products than this list provides. However, we hope this becomes your guide to help you nail your morning and evening routines. Your skin will thank you!
