The Benefits of Seaweed: Your Skin

Seaweed: May be your new favorite part of a beach day, and the best kept skincare secret for centuries.  From Aphrodite to Cleopatra, seaweed has been revered for thousands of years for its many healing properties, and scientists continue to find new benefits to this day. In fact, Thalassotherapy (or Seaweed Therapy) dates all the way back to ancient times when the Greeks would take seaweed baths, a ceremony held in the highest regard. The benefits of Seaweed Therapy are an expansive and impressive list, from Insomnia remedy to Arthritis relief, but you don’t need to soak in a tub to reap these results anymore (although, we 10/10 recommend the experience!).

So what is it that makes seaweed such a skincare powerhouse?  First and foremost, seaweed is incredibly soothing, and helps relieve not only your typical dry skin and pesky patches, but even Eczema and Psoriasis. Nearly as hydrating as water itself, the moisturizing properties found in seaweed are unmatched.

Second, and maybe a little surprising, seaweed is packed with antioxidant and anti-aging goodness. That’s right. The secret to a youthful glow comes from under the sea, not under the knife. Whether you eat it with your sushi or apply it to your skin, the all-natural benefits found in seaweed are near impossible to recreate.

Next up, seaweed helps keep skin clean and clear.  Rich in iodine, seaweed is anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory, to name a few benefits.  Seaweed helps reduce facial swelling, from annoying bloating to those painful, under-the-skin pimples. While seaweed is often thought of as just another element of beach day, it actually is an incredibly effective and natural agent to promote skin clarity.

Last but certainly not least, seaweed is chock-full of peptides and minerals to make your skin resilient and balanced. Magnesium, manganese, vitamins C and E are all naturally occurring in seaweed, and will make your skin as strong as the tides.

We know less about the ocean floor than the moon’s surface, yet the benefits of seaweed have been studied for centuries and are still being discovered today.  So the next time you’re spending a day at the shore or buying new skincare products like si SKIN Luminous Brightening Elixir, remember the all-natural, organic wonder that is seaweed and take inspiration to be as strong, beautiful, authentic as the sea herself.
